The Doms Cathedral, or “Notre Dame des Doms”, is, along with the “Pont d’Avignon” and the “Palais des Papes”, one of the most famous monuments in the city.
Three statues of the Virgin Mary are present there, ranging from a dozen centimeters to six meters, the largest being the one on top of the cathedral.
Erected in Avignon more than a millennium ago, the cathedral was destroyed several times, first by the Saracens in 731, then rebuilt about four hundred years later in 1111. Then the French Revolution came and temporarily turned the cathedral into a prison.
Only one tower was erected at the time, as Provençal architectural tradition suggests.
You can visit it and hear the typical sound of its two organs from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm during the summer.
