The Palace of the Popes is undoubtedly a must-visit in Avignon. You won’t miss this gigantic Gothic-style building once you get to the town which took its nickname from this monument.
It was built during the 14th century by Benedict XII and Clement VI for the popes' arrival in the city. It is one of the top ten most visited monuments in France, with an average of 600,000 annual visitors. Symbol of the resisting popes of its time, it was also used for other purposes, including a military base during the 19th century and a cultural center today.
